I actively visited my competition's spa locations and other spas when I traveled to find inspiration for the experiences, services, and products they were offering. Taking note of their unique concepts, creative messaging, and distinctive design elements that resonated with me was one of the keys to adding innovation to my operation. But that alone was not enough!
Another aspect I found helpful and highly recommend is reading spa industry magazines and blogs. This helps tremendously and is vital for staying on top of new trends, techniques, and offerings emerging across all international markets. However, don't just read about innovation - take time to critically analyze each new idea and determine how you could implement a novel spin on it tailored for your operation and guests.
Something I started to love doing over the years was looking outside of the spa industry, which opened up a world of innovative possibilities. Industries like hospitality, retail, technology, and consumer products are constantly evolving their customer experiences through thoughtful design, digitization, personalization, and creative services. Observing both in person and online what works well in these sectors and spending time brainstorming with myself and others about how such ideas could be adapted to spa and wellness operations allowed me to create successful concepts to curate unique, innovative spa journeys.
With time, I saw the great impact and the advantages of nurturing an innovative mindset, which was helpful for both my spa business's success and my own career growth. Consistently implementing creative new wellness services, unique retail lines, innovative pricing models, and fresh experiential elements allowed me to differentiate our spa while staying ahead of our competition. I strongly believe today that innovation breeds loyalty - both retaining an existing client base and attracting new guests excited to discover what's new, buzz-worthy, and trendy at your spa.
